Upgrading the memory in a computer needs to be done with some research undertaken beforehand to identify what type of memory sticks to purchase and if the existing memory already installed can be retained or will be made redundant.

Factors to ascertain are the physical type of memory eg SODIMM, LRDIMM, UDIMM. These depend on what type of computer the memory is going in eg Server, Laptop etc. Type of memory eg DDR, DDR2,DDR3, DDR4, DDR5 etc DDR stands for dual data rate with 3 being the oldest type and DDR5 being the newest although DDR6 is in the pipeline for 2026. Each computer will accept only one type of DDR memory eg DDR4 or DDR5 etc.

Clock speed or transfer rate eg 1600Mhz, 2400Mhz, 2666Mhz, 3200Mhz etc and this will be matched to the processor. Usually a higher speed can be installed but it will run at the lowest speed of the installed DIMMs or the speed of the processor whichever is lower.

Data rate, this is the combined total bandwidth that the DIMM is capable of transferring and again like transfer rate the lowest rate will be used. Examples of rates available are 17000,19200, 21300 etc.

Voltage, DIMMS will typically run between 1.2 to 1.5 volts. Overclocking normally requires the voltage to be increased although this does have a limit at which point the DIMM will be destroyed.

ECC or Non-ECC. This stands for error correction code. Servers tend to use ECC memory as it is deemed to be more reliable. Non-ECC memory cannot be used in ECC machines and vice-versa. The DIMMS are further defined by buffered or registered vs unbuffered ans sometimes these can be mixed.

Choosing memory sticks for an upgrade can be a bit of a minefield but a lot of manufacturers have helper apps that will aid memory identification and also some memory manufacturers have similar offerings.
